EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Michael Boyle, the Archbishop of Armagh and Lord Chancellor of Ireland, in the late 17th century. Born in County Meath, Ireland, in 1609, Boyle rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church to become one of the most influential figures in Irish politics and religion. He served as Archbishop of Armagh from 1653 until his death in 1702, making him the longest-serving Archbishop in Irish history. Boyle's tenure as Lord Chancellor of Ireland, which began in 1661, was marked by his efforts to promote peace and stability in the troubled country. He worked tirelessly to reconcile the Catholic and Protestant communities, and played a key role in negotiating the Treaty of Limerick in 1691, which ended the Williamite War in Ireland. Despite his efforts to bring peace, Boyle faced numerous challenges during his time in office. He was a vocal opponent of the Penal Laws, which discriminated against Catholics in Ireland, and was imprisoned several times for his outspokenness. This portrait, which dates from around 1670, shows Boyle in his full regalia as Archbishop of Armagh and Lord Chancellor of Ireland. He is depicted wearing a richly decorated robe and mitre, with a cross hanging around his neck. The background is adorned with intricate gold and silver embellishments, reflecting the grandeur of his position. Boyle's legacy as a peacemaker and advocate for religious tolerance continues to be celebrated in Ireland today. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and influential figure, whose contributions to Irish history are still felt more than three centuries later.
