EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a young and enamored King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and his future Queen Sirikit of Thailand (then Princess Kitiyakara) during their student days in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1949. The image beautifully encapsulates the beginning of their lifelong love story. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, born on December 5, 1927, was the ninth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty in Thailand. He ascended to the throne on June 9, 1946, at the age of 18, following the passing of his brother, Ananda Mahidol. Princess Sirikit, born on August 12, 1932, was the eldest daughter of Prince and Princess Mahidol of Songkla. She was studying at the École des Hautes Études Commerciales in Geneva when she met the future king. The couple's paths crossed in Switzerland, where King Bhumibol was pursuing his education in engineering. Their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship, and they were engaged in 1950. They married on April 28, 1950, in Bangkok, Thailand, and went on to have four children together. This photograph, taken during their time as students in Lausanne, offers a rare glimpse into their early days and the start of their remarkable love story. The image is a poignant reminder of the personal moments that shaped the lives of these two future monarchs and the history of Thailand.
