Step back in time and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of historically accurate fancy dress costumes from the year 1911. This photograph, titled "The Fancy Dress Ball Season: Some Historically Accurate Dresses Suitable for Coming Dances," offers a glimpse into the elaborate and intricately designed costumes that graced the ballrooms of the era. Mrs. Charles H. Ashdown, a renowned lecturer on historic costume, has kindly curated a selection of costumes to help guests at fancy dress balls avoid the absurdity of not knowing what they are. The popularity of historically accurate costumes was at an all-time high, as evidenced by the Shakespeare Ball held in June of that year. Beginning at the top left of the image, we find a Saxon gentleman, dressed in a tunic adorned with intricate embroidery and a headdress featuring a horned helmet. Next, we encounter a lady of Richard II's court, her gown adorned with velvet and fur, and a headdress featuring a diadem and veil. The Saxon lady, also pictured, wears a simple yet elegant gown with a high waistline and a headdress adorned with flowers and feathers. Moving on, we come across a courtier of Edward IV's reign, dressed in a velvet doublet and hose, with a fur-trimmed cloak and a tall, conical hat. A dame of Edward IV's reign is depicted next, her gown featuring a low-cut bodice and a voluminous skirt, accessorized with a jeweled headdress and a fan. Lastly, a page to Richard II is shown, dressed in a simple tunic and hose, with a leather belt and a feathered cap. These stunning costumes, with their elaborate headdresses and intricate details, transport us back to a time when fancy dress balls were the height of social fashion and historically accurate costumes were the epitome of elegance and sophistication.
