The Fronde, which translates to "fronde" or "frolic" in French, was a series of civil conflicts that erupted between 1648 and 1653, primarily in Paris, against the regent, Cardinal Jules Mazarin. In this photograph, a large crowd of Parisiens, or Parisians, can be seen gathered in a bustling square, their faces etched with determination and resolve. They have come together to attend a meeting, united in their opposition to Mazarin's rule and the heavy taxes that had been imposed upon them.
