EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite engraving of Arum dioscoridis, also known as the Arum lily, is a stunning example of botanical illustration from the 19th century. The image was created through a collaborative effort between Ferdinand Bauer, a skilled watercolorist, and George Sowerby, a renowned engraver. The original watercolor was produced between 1793 and 1805, during Bauer's tenure as a botanical artist for Sir Joseph Banks at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England. Arum dioscoridis is a member of the Araceae family, which is part of the monocotyledonous order Alismatales. This flowering plant is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. Its distinctive features include its large, purple, spathe and spadix, which enclose the small, true flowers. The plant's unique reproductive structure is adapted for pollination by flies and beetles. The engraving was published in Flora Graeca, a comprehensive work on Greek plants, edited by James Edward Smith. Smith was a prominent British botanist, natural philosopher, and president of the Linnean Society. The publication of Flora Graeca marked a significant contribution to the scientific community, as it provided accurate and detailed records of the botanical diversity of Greece. This beautiful illustration showcases the intricacy and artistry of botanical illustration during the 18th and 19th centuries. The meticulous attention to detail and the ability to capture the essence of the plant in both watercolor and engraving make this a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
