December 12, 1960: A Turning Point in Algerian History This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a pivotal moment in Algerian history, as French soldiers patrol the streets of the Kasbah, the historic quarter of Algiers, following the violent riots of the previous day. The date, December 12, 1960, marked a significant turning point in the Algerian War of Independence, which had been raging since 1954. The riots were triggered by the 'Setif Massacre' of May 8, 1945, when French troops had opened fire on a peaceful demonstration in the town of Setif, killing thousands of Algerian civilians.
