EDITORS COMMENTS
December 12, 1960: A Turning Point in Algerian History This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a pivotal moment in Algerian history, as French soldiers patrol the streets of the Kasbah, the historic quarter of Algiers, following the violent riots of the previous day. The date, December 12, 1960, marked a significant turning point in the Algerian War of Independence, which had been raging since 1954. The riots were triggered by the 'Setif Massacre' of May 8, 1945, when French troops had opened fire on a peaceful demonstration in the town of Setif, killing thousands of Algerian civilians. The memory of this atrocity had long simmered beneath the surface, fueling growing discontent and resentment towards French rule. On December 11, 1960, tensions boiled over once again, as Algerians took to the streets to protest against French colonialism and demand independence. The ensuing violence left hundreds dead and thousands injured. In response, French authorities deployed soldiers to restore order, resulting in the scene depicted in this photograph. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the intense conflict and struggle for self-determination that characterized this period in Algerian history. It underscores the profound impact of colonialism on the region and the lengths to which people were willing to go to assert their freedom and sovereignty.
