EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Leeds United team group before their intense clash against Aston Villa in the 1946/1947 First Division. Taken at Villa Park on December 14th, 1946, this historic moment showcases the determination and unity of these football legends. Standing tall in the back row from left to right are J. Gerald Henry, Leslie Goldberg (later known as Leslie Gaunt), J. Smith, James "Jim". Twomey, Kenneth Gadsby, and Bobby Browne - a player who proudly represented Northern Ireland with six international caps under his belt. In the front row, we have David Cochrane, Aubrey Powell, George Ainsley (who would later manage Israel and Workington), John Short, Dennis Grainger, and Thomas Holley. Each player exudes confidence as they prepare to give their all for their beloved club. Notably significant is Leslie Goldberg's presence in this photograph. He made history as both the first Jewish player to represent England at schoolboy level and also became Leeds United's first Jewish player. In 1948 he changed his surname to Gaunt but will forever be remembered for breaking barriers within English football. This remarkable image from Colorsport Images allows us to travel back in time and witness a defining moment in Leeds United's rich history while celebrating diversity within the beautiful game of football.
