Illustration of two stars that have moved so close that each becomes tidally warped
This is an artists interpretation (inspired by an earlier Chesley Bonestell painting which appeared in Beyond The Solar System, 1964) of two stars that have moved so close that each becomes tidally warped towards the other. These two stars are close enough that gaseous material from the primary star (the smaller one) is being accreted by the (apparently) larger secondary star. However the secondary star has been surrounded by so much material at this stage that it only appears larger - while in fact it is only the accreted material that can be seen with the much smaller secondary star itself being hidden inside the material

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's interpretation of a mesmerizing celestial phenomenon. Inspired by Chesley Bonestell's earlier painting, the image depicts two stars that have drawn so close to each other that they become tidally warped. The primary star, appearing smaller in size, is being engulfed by the gaseous material from its seemingly larger companion - the secondary star. However, it is revealed that the secondary star itself remains hidden within this swirling mass of accreted material. The digital composite artwork beautifully captures the essence of these binary stars locked in a gravitational dance. The futuristic and science fiction elements add an intriguing touch to this visually stunning concept piece. Against a backdrop of mountainous hillsides and vast open space, these two objects dominate the landscape with their distorted shapes and vortex-like patterns. Astrophysics enthusiasts will be captivated by this illustration as it delves into concepts such as tidal forces, gravitation, and stellar systems. It serves as a reminder of the cosmic wonders that exist beyond our planet Earth. With no human presence in sight, this image invites viewers to ponder upon the mysteries of our universe while appreciating its artistic beauty. Frank Hettick has skillfully brought together various elements from astrophysics and geophysics to create a thought-provoking piece of space art. This digitally generated image offers us a glimpse into an extraordinary celestial event where nature's forces shape even distant stars into breathtaking forms.
