A Standard Missile 3 is launched from the Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie

December 11, 2003 - A Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) is launched from the Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG-70) as part of the Missile Defense Agencys latest Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) test to defeat a medium range ballistic missile threat. The SM-3, part of the Aegis Weapon System intercepted a target launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii at an approximate speed of 3.7 kilometers per second. The two missiles collided several hundred kilometers from Kauai at an altitude of approximately 137 kilometers. The BMDS test included evaluation of the long-range surveillance and tracking capabilities of two Navy ships, the effective communications between the ships and command and control units in Colorado, and the launch of the SM-3 interceptor. This was the fourth successful intercept for the sea-based element of the BMDS

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the awe-inspiring power of the Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie as it launches a Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) into the night sky. This momentous event took place on December 11,2003, during the latest test conducted by the Missile Defense Agency to counter a medium range ballistic missile threat. The SM-3, an integral part of the Aegis Weapon System, successfully intercepted its target launched from Hawaii's Pacific Missile Range Facility. Traveling at an astonishing speed of approximately 3.7 kilometers per second, these two missiles collided several hundred kilometers away from Kauai at an altitude of around 137 kilometers. This comprehensive Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) test included evaluating long-range surveillance and tracking capabilities between Navy ships and command units in Colorado. The launch of the SM-3 interceptor marked its fourth successful intercept for the sea-based element of BMDS. The image captures not only the fiery propulsion and raw power unleashed by this cutting-edge technology but also highlights elements such as danger and defense that are inherent in naval warfare. With no people visible in sight, it emphasizes how advanced weapon systems like these can operate autonomously to safeguard our nations against potential threats. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph taken by Stocktrek Images, we are reminded of humanity's continuous pursuit to enhance our military capabilities while ensuring global security through effective missile defense systems like Aegis combat system and SM-3 interceptors.
