Mock-up of Large Hadron Collider at CERN
Mock-up of the Large Hadron Collider. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the proposed new accelerator for the CERN European particle physics laboratory. The magnets for the LHC (seen here in blue) will sit on top of the existing Large Electron-Positron (LEP) accelerator at CERNs Geneva site. The LEP occupies a tunnel some 27km in circumference. Advances in magnet design mean that the LHC will be able to bend beams of protons and heavy ions around the same curvature as the far lighter electrons used in LEP. This will create far higher collision energies than the existing LEP ring, allowing scientists to delve even further into sub-atomic processes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mock-up of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC is an ambitious project that aims to push the boundaries of scientific exploration by delving deeper into sub-atomic processes. In this image, we see the magnets for the LHC, depicted in striking blue, positioned atop the existing Large Electron-Positron (LEP) accelerator. The LEP itself occupies a massive tunnel with a circumference of approximately 27 kilometers. However, thanks to advancements in magnet design, the LHC will have the capability to bend beams of protons and heavy ions around curves similar to those achieved with far lighter electrons used in LEP. This breakthrough will result in significantly higher collision energies than its predecessor. Scientists are eagerly anticipating these enhanced collision energies as they hold immense potential for unraveling mysteries within our universe on a microscopic scale. By studying these collisions at unprecedented levels of energy and precision, researchers hope to gain valuable insights into fundamental particles and their interactions. This remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library not only captures the impressive scale and complexity of this groundbreaking experiment but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and understanding about our world at its most fundamental level.
