Mountain gorilla infant feeding

Mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) infant feeding at its mothers breast. Mountain gorillas are found in cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes between Rwanda, Uganda and Zaire. The high elevation and rainfall makes this habitat wet and cold. The adults eat many kilograms of vegetation daily (roots, leaves and stems) and can reach over 2 metres in height. Infants stay with their mothers for 3 to 4 years. This slow reproductive rate has left mountain gorillas vulnerable to habitat destruction, poaching and war, making them highly endangered. Photographed in Virunga National Park, Rwanda

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment of a Mountain gorilla infant feeding at its mother's breast. The image showcases the incredible bond between the mother and her young one in the lush cloud forests high on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and Zaire. The mountain gorillas' habitat is characterized by high elevation and abundant rainfall, creating a wet and cold environment. These magnificent creatures consume several kilograms of vegetation daily, including roots, leaves, and stems. With their towering height exceeding 2 meters, these gentle giants roam peacefully through their leafy surroundings. Infants remain under their mothers' care for an extended period of 3 to 4 years before gaining independence. However, this slow reproductive rate has made mountain gorillas highly vulnerable to threats such as habitat destruction caused by human activities, poaching incidents driven by illegal wildlife trade demand, and even war-torn regions. Photographed within Virunga National Park in Rwanda - home to diverse African fauna - this image serves as a reminder of both the beauty and fragility of nature. As an endangered species facing numerous challenges due to human interference in their natural habitats across Central Africa's rainforests; it emphasizes the urgent need for conservation efforts aimed at protecting these remarkable animals. Through this photograph from Science Photo Library capturing intricate details like maternal care during breastfeeding moments amidst dense foliage; we are invited into the world of these great apes thriving in montane environments with high altitudes. Let us cherish this glimpse into their family group dynamics while recognizing our responsibility towards preserving their existence for generations to come.
