John Stapp during a high G-force test on a sled

Acceleration and deceleration testing. Time-lapse images of John Stapp strapped in a sled seat during high G-force acceleration and deceleration testing. The images run from left to right, starting at upper left. The 27 rocket-propelled runs made by Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Stapp (born 1910) showed the effects of rapid accelerat- ion and deceleration on the human body. On December 10 1954, Stapp reached 632 miles per hour in 5 seconds before being brought back to rest in just over a second with a force of over 40 Gs. Despite initial blindness and collapsed lungs, he quickly recovered, proving that it was possible to survive an ejection from a supersonic aircraft

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Stapp during a groundbreaking high G-force test on a sled. The time-lapse images, arranged from left to right, showcase the incredible journey of Stapp as he experiences rapid acceleration and deceleration. In this series of 27 rocket-propelled runs, Stapp fearlessly volunteered to demonstrate the effects of extreme forces on the human body. On December 10,1954, he achieved an astonishing speed of 632 miles per hour in just 5 seconds before being abruptly brought back to rest in slightly over a second with a force exceeding 40 Gs. Remarkably, despite enduring temporary blindness and collapsed lungs due to these intense conditions, Stapp made a swift recovery. His resilience served as undeniable proof that surviving ejection from supersonic aircraft was indeed possible. This extraordinary photograph not only showcases the immense courage and dedication displayed by John Paul Stapp but also highlights his pivotal contributions to aviation technology and transportation safety. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries in scientific exploration. Captured by Science Photo Library, this image encapsulates the remarkable advancements achieved through rocket propulsion and high G-force testing while honoring one man's unwavering determination for progress.
