House in danger from coastal erosion C016 / 9200

Happisburghs sandy cliffs have been eroding since the Ice Age though man-made sea defences, below the cliffs, installed after the 1953 floods slowed the rate of erosion but have been failing since the 1980 s. The cliffs comprise layers of sand and clay which are eroded both by the sea on one side and rain water run-off from behind. During the long winter 2012-2013 the cliffs lost 20 meters in places. Happisburgh is a historic village on the north-east coast of Norfolk. Pronounced Haze-bruh", and spelt Hapesburg in the Domesday Book, the name means Haeps Town."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the imminent danger faced by a house perched on the edge of coastal erosion in Happisburgh, Norfolk. The sandy cliffs that have been eroding since the Ice Age pose a constant threat to this historic village. Man-made sea defenses installed after the devastating floods of 1953 initially slowed down the erosion rate, but they have been failing since the 1980s. The cliffs, composed of layers of sand and clay, are relentlessly worn away by both the relentless pounding of waves from one side and rainwater runoff from behind. During an exceptionally long winter in 2012-2013, these vulnerable cliffs lost a staggering 20 meters in some areas. Happisburgh's significance is not only rooted in its vulnerability to natural forces but also its rich history. Pronounced "Haze-bruh" and spelled Hapesburg in the Domesday Book, it derives its name from Haeps Town. In this image captured by David Parker for Science Photo Library, we witness nature's destructive power as cracks appear on the bungalow's foundation due to ongoing land erosion. This photograph serves as a stark reminder of how climate change-induced factors like rising sea levels can threaten our coastal communities if adequate measures aren't taken to protect them.
