Franz Joseph Gall, German physiologist
Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828), German physiologist. Gall believed that the brains shape was related to mental capacity and that different parts of the brain controlled specific parts of the human body. Gall also believed that this shape could be deduced by measuring the shape and bumps of the skull. From this he developed a new science, called phrenology, which was later discredited. Gall was banned from lecturing in Vienna, Austria, because his materialistic philosophy was considered subversive of religion. Lithograph from Galerie medicale (1825-1829), a collection of portraits by Pierre Roch Vigneron (1789-1872)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the essence of Franz Joseph Gall, a renowned German physiologist whose groundbreaking theories revolutionized the understanding of the human brain. In this portrait, Gall's piercing gaze and distinguished countenance reflect his unwavering dedication to unraveling the mysteries of the mind. Gall's pioneering belief that mental capacity could be determined by examining the shape and bumps on an individual's skull led to his development of phrenology, a now-discredited science. He postulated that different regions of the brain controlled specific functions in the body, laying the foundation for modern neuroscience. However, Gall's radical ideas faced vehement opposition from religious authorities in Vienna, Austria. His materialistic philosophy was deemed subversive and resulted in him being banned from lecturing there. Despite these setbacks, Gall persisted in his pursuit of knowledge and left an indelible mark on medical history. The monochromatic artwork beautifully captures both Gall's intellectual prowess and historical significance. It serves as a poignant reminder of how scientific progress often faces resistance but ultimately shapes our understanding of ourselves and our world. This print is not just a testament to one man’s contributions; it symbolizes humanity’s unyielding quest for knowledge about our own biology and existence itself.
