DNA nucleosome, molecular model

DNA nucleosome. Molecular model of a nucleosome, the fundamental repeating unit used to package DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) inside cell nuclei. DNA is the molecule that carries the genetic code that forms the basis of all life on Earth. It is a long molecule and has to be tightly coiled to fit inside the nucleus. DNAs double helix structure is shown here as a coiled orange spiral. The DNA is coiled round a core of histone proteins (multicoloured ribbons). The ribbons represent the molecular structure of the histone proteins. Each set of two DNA loops around a histone core is known as a nucleosome. Further compacting and packaging (not seen here) form the denser forms of chromatin, and eventually the cells chromosomes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a molecular model of a DNA nucleosome, the building block responsible for packaging DNA within cell nuclei. As the molecule that carries the genetic code essential to all life on Earth, DNA is an incredibly long structure that must be tightly coiled to fit inside the nucleus. The image beautifully depicts this coiling as an elegant orange spiral representing DNAs double helix structure. At the core of this intricate arrangement are multicolored ribbons symbolizing histone proteins. These proteins play a crucial role in organizing and compacting DNA by acting as spools around which it wraps itself. Each set of two loops formed by DNA encircling a histone core constitutes a nucleosome. Although not visible in this snapshot, further condensing and packaging processes give rise to denser forms of chromatin, eventually leading to the formation of chromosomes within cells. This stunning visual representation offers insights into both biology and biochemistry, highlighting key concepts such as genetic information storage and protein-DNA interactions. It serves as a reminder of how complex yet beautifully orchestrated our biological systems are at their most fundamental levels. Captured by Science Photo Library, this print provides an awe-inspiring glimpse into the world of molecular biology without mentioning any commercial use or affiliation with specific companies.
