Canine olfactory system, artwork C018 / 0295

Canine olfactory system. Artwork showing the complicated airways inside a dogs nose that allow olfaction (its sense of smell). Shown here is the shape of the airway, which extends from the dogs nostril (naris) to the cranial location above the eye. The cross-section reveals respiratory turbinates in the region of the nose responsible for heating and cooling air breathed in. Further back is the olfactory epithelium, where smells are actually sensed. The dogs brain is behind this. Small chemical molecules in the air (coloured spheres) are drawn in through the nostrils (yellow arrow) to bring them to the olfactory epithelium

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and fascinating canine olfactory system. The artwork, titled C018 / 0295, provides a detailed view of the airways within a dog's nose that enable its remarkable sense of smell. From the nostril (naris) to the cranial region above the eye, we can observe the shape and structure of these airways. A cross-section reveals respiratory turbinates responsible for regulating the temperature of inhaled air. Moving further back, we encounter the olfactory epithelium where smells are actually sensed by small chemical molecules present in the surrounding air. The dog's brain is situated behind this crucial sensory organ. The image beautifully captures yellow arrows representing how these chemical molecules are drawn into the nostrils to reach their destination at the olfactory epithelium. Against a clean white background, this illustration highlights various elements such as anatomy, biology, zoology, and wildlife. Created by Claus Lunau from Science Photo Library, this artwork offers an enlightening glimpse into one of nature's most extraordinary abilities – a dog's sense of smell. It serves as a reminder of just how complex and sophisticated our animal companions' sensory systems truly are.
