Allergic response, artwork

Allergic response. Computer artwork showing the process that produces an allergic reaction. Antigens (blue), such as pollen, cause the release of cytokines (signalling chemicals) that stimulate B-lymphocyte white blood cells (large, round, upper right) to produce antibodies (Y-shaped). The antibodies travel in the blood stream and are picked up by mast cells (centre left), which use them to identify the antigens. When the antibodies come into contact with the antigens they bind to them, stimulating the mast cell to release histamine (yellow), which triggers the allergic reaction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Allergic Response" beautifully depicts the intricate process that occurs within our bodies when an allergic reaction takes place. The computer-generated illustration showcases various elements involved in this immune response, providing a deeper understanding of the biological and chemical aspects behind allergies. The image portrays antigens, represented by mesmerizing blue patterns resembling pollen particles, triggering the release of cytokines. These signaling chemicals stimulate B-lymphocyte white blood cells, which are prominently displayed as large round structures in the upper right corner. These lymphocytes play a crucial role in producing antibodies, symbolized by Y-shaped formations that travel through the bloodstream. As these antibodies circulate throughout the body, they are picked up by mast cells depicted at the center-left region of the artwork. Mast cells utilize these antibodies to identify specific antigens present within their surroundings. When contact is made between antibodies and antigens, histamine – illustrated as vibrant yellow bursts – is released from mast cells. Histamine serves as a catalyst for initiating allergic reactions within our system. This visually striking representation emphasizes how this biochemical process unfolds on a cellular level and highlights key components such as leukocytes (white blood cells), cytokines, allergens, b lymphocytes, and th2 cells. Claus Lunau's remarkable creation not only showcases his artistic talent but also provides valuable insights into immunology and allergy-related research.
