1775 Captain James Cook explorer

James Cook, Captain of HMS Barc Endeavour (b. 7th November 1728 - d. 14th February 1779). Steel engraving by E. Scriven 1833 with later hand colouring, after the painting by N. Dance 1775/6 in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Dances painting was considered " an excellent likeness" at the time. Explorer, navigator and cartographer, Cooks voyages to the South Seas were the foremost scientific explorations of the 18th century. He was accompanied on his first voyage by botanist (and later President of the Royal Society) Joseph Banks who commissioned the painting upon which this engraving is based. His crew became the first Europeans to see Australias eastern shore. During later voyages he looked for the Antarctic continent and searched for the northwest passage, charting and discovering islands as he went. He was killed while ashore in Hawaii during a dispute with its inhabitants

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Captain James Cook, the renowned explorer of the 18th century. The steel engraving by E. Scriven in 1833, with later hand coloring, beautifully captures Cook's likeness from a painting by N. Dance in 1775/6 at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Captain James Cook was not only an explorer but also a navigator and cartographer whose voyages to the South Seas were groundbreaking scientific explorations during his time. Accompanied by botanist Joseph Banks, who later became President of the Royal Society, Cook's crew became the first Europeans to lay eyes on Australia's eastern shore. Throughout his subsequent journeys, Cook embarked on expeditions searching for Antarctica and charting new islands while seeking the elusive northwest passage. His contributions to navigation and exploration are immeasurable. Tragically, Captain Cook met his untimely demise during a dispute with inhabitants of Hawaii while ashore. Despite this unfortunate ending to his life, his legacy as one of history's greatest explorers lives on. This remarkable print serves as a testament to Captain James Cook's significant role in shaping our understanding of geography and anthropology during the 18th century. It is a tribute to his unwavering spirit of adventure and dedication to expanding human knowledge through exploration.
