EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a nostalgic scene on Boscawen Street in Truro, Cornwall, around 1925. In this charming snapshot, a group of boys can be seen surrounding a donkey and trap outside the iconic Red Lion Hotel. The image was skillfully captured by Major Arthur William Gill, a well-known Cornishman and amateur photographer of his time. Major Gill's passion for photography extended beyond capturing stills; he also presented cine films to various esteemed groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society during the 1920s and 1930s. His talent with an ordinary camera is evident in the quarter plate slides he prolifically took. What makes some of these slides truly remarkable is that Major Gill painted them by hand himself. This artistic touch adds an extra layer of depth and beauty to his already impressive photographs. Through his unique vision and dedication to his craft, Major Arthur William Gill has left behind a valuable visual record of life in Cornwall during this era. As we gaze upon this particular photograph from the collection at the Royal Cornwall Museum, we are transported back in time to witness a moment frozen forever - where young boys find joy in the company of animals amidst the bustling streets of Truro.
