EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken on the 31st of August in 1917, we are transported back to a time when Truro City Hall was bustling with excitement. The image captures Miss Ade Thomas' pierrot troupe gathered outside the grand building for a fete dedicated to supporting wounded soldiers and sailors during the First World War. The scene is filled with an air of jubilation as men and women from all walks of life gather on Boscawen Street. The cobbled road beneath their feet adds authenticity to the historic setting, while the crowd's diverse attire showcases their creativity and enthusiasm for fancy dress. Amongst them stands a blind man, his presence reminding us that even amidst times of war, unity prevails. A sea of hats adorns heads throughout the crowd, each one unique in its own way. In true Cornish fashion, bicycles can be seen parked nearby - a testament to both practicality and style. Photographer Arthur William Jordan skillfully captures this momentous occasion; his lens immortalizing not only the people but also their unwavering support for those who sacrificed so much during these tumultuous times. This remarkable photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Cornwall's contribution to the Great War and how communities came together in solidarity for such noble causes.
