View of Goonvrea House with Cliff House below, Perranarworthal, Cornwall. December 1924

The general view from across the valley to Goonvrea House with its gardens behind and the coach house and stables to the right. In 1980, Rex Barratt writes in his book, Stately Homes in and Around Truro, " Goonvrea, probably built by the Fox family of Falmouth and later owned and occupied by Sir Frederick Martin Williams, M.P. for Truro (1865-1878), who was a director of the Perran Iron Foundry and the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of Cornwall. Later owners were J.P. Paull, and W.E. Harris, who was there in 1939. During the last war it was utilised by U.S. troops and is now a well-known hotel". The hotel was owned by Tony and Joyce Webb and is reported to have been devastated by fire in 1982. By the early 1990s new build houses were erected on the site. The stable block remained standing and has since been converted into houses. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the timeless beauty of Goonvrea House and its enchanting surroundings, this vintage print transports us back to December 1924 in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. The grandeur of Goonvrea House is evident as it proudly stands atop the valley, overlooking its meticulously manicured gardens. To the right, we catch a glimpse of the coach house and stables that once served this magnificent estate. Built by the esteemed Fox family of Falmouth, Goonvrea House later became home to Sir Frederick Martin Williams, a prominent figure in Truro's history as both an influential Member of Parliament and director of the renowned Perran Iron Foundry. Sir Williams was also honored as the first Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons in Cornwall. Throughout its rich history, Goonvrea House changed hands several times; notable owners included J. P. Paull and W. E. Harris during his residence there in 1939. During World War II, this remarkable manor played host to U. S troops before eventually transforming into a well-known hotel under Tony and Joyce Webb's ownership. Sadly, tragedy struck when fire ravaged through the hotel in 1982; however, remnants from its past remained with new houses being constructed on-site while preserving the stable block which has since been converted into charming homes. Thanks to photographer Arthur William Jordan's keen eye for detail and composition, we can now cherish this snapshot forever—celebrating not only Goonvrea House but also its connection to Cornish heritage.
