EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the essence of a bygone era, showcasing the charming seaside towns of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston-on-Sea in Norfolk. Created as a promotional poster for London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1935, this artwork by Henry George Gawthorn transports us back to a time when rail travel was at its peak. Gawthorn, an architect turned artist, had a knack for capturing the allure of destinations through his pictorial art. His attention to detail is evident in this piece, as he masterfully depicts the idyllic beaches and vibrant atmosphere that awaited visitors to these coastal gems. What sets Gawthorn's work apart is his playful inclusion of himself within many of his posters. In this particular piece, we can spot him wearing his signature pince-nez glasses and panama hat – a whimsical touch that adds personality to an already captivating scene. Measuring at an impressive 1016 mm x 1270 mm, this print allows us to appreciate every intricate detail and immerse ourselves in the nostalgia it evokes. It serves as a testament to both the artistic talent of Gawthorn and the enduring beauty of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston-on-Sea. Preserved by the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this remarkable print offers viewers a glimpse into Britain's rich railway history while also serving as a reminder of simpler times spent enjoying sun-soaked beaches along England's picturesque coastline.
