Created as a promotional poster for London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1935, this artwork by Henry George Gawthorn transports us back to a time when rail travel was at its peak. Gawthorn, an architect turned artist, had a knack for capturing the allure of destinations through his pictorial art. His attention to detail is evident in this piece, as he masterfully depicts the idyllic beaches and vibrant atmosphere that awaited visitors to these coastal gems. What sets Gawthorn's work apart is his playful inclusion of himself within many of his posters. In this particular piece, we can spot him wearing his signature pince-nez glasses and panama hat – a whimsical touch that adds personality to an already captivating scene. Measuring at an impressive 1016 mm x 1270 mm, this print allows us to appreciate every intricate detail and immerse ourselves in the nostalgia it evokes.
