EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Waterloo Station in 1948, as depicted in a poster commissioned by Southern Railways (SR) to commemorate the centenary of its opening. The artist behind this remarkable artwork is Helen McKie, a talented individual who studied at the prestigious Lambeth School of Art and showcased her work at renowned galleries such as the Paris Salon and leading London establishments. The poster serves as a tribute to one hundred years of uninterrupted service during times of war and peace. It beautifully encapsulates the grandeur and significance of Waterloo Station, with its bustling platforms, iconic clocks, and even guardsmen adding an air of regality. The attention to detail is evident in every stroke, showcasing McKie's artistic prowess. Beyond her contributions to SR's posters, McKie was also known for her versatility. She wrote and illustrated booklets and other promotional material while also designing uniforms and upholstery.
