Flying Officer Bill Draper of 8 Humewood Drive, Toronto, Canada

Flying Officer Bill Draper of 8 Humewood Drive, Toronto, Canada, tells an interesting listener how he shot down a German Luftwaffe FW 190 in a head on attack. Both aircraft dived, but his Spitfire dived a little sharper than the German, whose propeller struck the Spitfires rudder, shedding a blade. It then spun to the ground. This was his second score of the afternoon, for earlier in the same sortie he shot down another FW.190 with his cannon.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, Flying Officer Bill Draper of 8 Humewood Drive, Toronto, Canada, recounts his thrilling encounter with a German Luftwaffe FW 190 during World War II. As he animatedly shares his story with an intrigued listener, the intensity of the moment is palpable. Draper describes how both aircraft engaged in a daring head-on attack that sent them hurtling towards the earth. However, fate favored him as his Spitfire executed a slightly sharper dive than the enemy plane. The propeller of the FW 190 collided with Draper's rudder, causing it to shed a blade and sending the German fighter spiraling towards its demise. This remarkable achievement marked Draper's second victory of that fateful afternoon. Earlier in the same sortie over North Africa in March 1943, he had successfully downed another FW 190 using his cannon skills. The photograph captures an airfield ambiance typical of those tumultuous times - brave pilots and their dedicated crew preparing for yet another mission amidst a backdrop of war and conflict. It serves as a poignant reminder of the courage displayed by individuals like Flying Officer Bill Draper who risked their lives to defend freedom during World War II. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints from the forties era, this image immortalizes not only an extraordinary feat but also pays tribute to all those who served in military campaigns across North Africa under RAF's banner during one of history's most significant conflicts.
