For two crowded hours the King and Queen visited Coventry this morning

For two crowded hours the King and Queen visited Coventry this morning. It was the third visit paid by his Majesty since the war began and the second by the Queen. They came together in the summer of 1940 to see war factories in operation and the King came again in the same year when he made his memorable tour of devastated and still smoking streets within 36 hours of the raid in November. Recollection of that visit - one which thrilled the world for its informality - is interesting because the focal point of todays programme was an inspection by their Majesties of the citys plans for reconstruction on the ruined sites, which was staged in St. Marys Guildhall - itself extensively damaged by enemy action - where, as a result of intensive work during the last 24 hours, a special exhibition was arranged illustrating the Coventry of the past, present and future, with special emphasis on the city that, it is hoped, will one day arise. The King and Queen spent 20 minutes here, and both took a profound interest in what had been prepared for them. They talked with officials, and the King spoke with the City Architect, Mr. Donald E. Gibson. Other features of the visit included a short tour around the cathedral ruins, where the King took special interest in the stone plnnacle which marks the spot where he surveyed the newly-created devastation on November 14th 1940, an inspection of civil devence personnel at Pool Meadow where many of the citys war heroes were presented to their Majesties; and a short tour of Coventry and Warwickshire hospital. Before leaving the city the King and Queen also carried out a private tour of a local factory. Our photo shows them in St Marys Guild Hall looking at the future plans for the city centre.

EDITORS COMMENTS
For two crowded hours, the King and Queen graced Coventry with their presence this morning. This marked the third visit by his Majesty since the war began, and the second for the Queen. Their initial visit in 1940 aimed to witness war factories in operation, while later that year, amidst still-smoking streets from a devastating raid, the King embarked on a memorable tour of destruction within just 36 hours. Today's programme held special significance as their Majesties inspected plans for reconstruction on ruined sites at St. Mary's Guildhall. Despite extensive damage caused by enemy action, intensive work over the past 24 hours transformed it into an exhibition showcasing Coventry's past, present, and future. The King and Queen spent twenty minutes immersed in this display, displaying genuine interest as they conversed with officials and engaged with City Architect Mr. Donald E. Gibson. Their visit also included exploring cathedral ruins where the King took particular notice of a stone pinnacle marking his vantage point during November 14th's devastation survey. Additionally, civil defense personnel were inspected at Pool Meadow while many of the city's war heroes were presented to their Majesties. Before departing Coventry, a private tour of a local factory was conducted by both royals. Our photo captures them inside St Mary's Guild Hall engrossed in examining future plans for revitalizing the city center.
