EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, German Kaiser Wilhelm II pays a state visit to the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II in Constantinople (now Istanbul) on board his imperial yacht, the SMS Hohenzollern, as they approach the German School located in the Hisar district. The year was 1898, and Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909, was the last Ottoman monarch to hold absolute power. His reign marked a period of decline for the Ottoman Empire, which had once been a formidable imperial power. The German Kaiser, dressed in a military uniform and wearing a helmet, is seen standing in the open deck of the yacht, while Sultan Abdul Hamid II, wearing a traditional Ottoman fez and robe, sits in a carriage accompanied by his wife, Sultana Gülistu Kadin, and other members of the Ottoman court. The crowd, consisting of Turkish officials, German diplomats, and local Roumelli Christians, lines the streets of Constantinople to welcome the German imperial couple. The German School, which was established in 1865, played a significant role in promoting German culture and education in the Ottoman Empire. This visit was an opportunity for the German Kaiser to showcase the strong ties between Germany and the Ottoman Empire, which were based on mutual interests and strategic alliances. The photograph captures the majesty and imperial grandeur of the two monarchs, as they embark on an official state meeting that would further solidify the relationship between their respective countries. The Bosphorus, the iconic waterway that divides Europe and Asia, serves as a stunning backdrop to this momentous occasion in the history of both Germany and Turkey.
