The year is uncertain, but Vauban's pioneering military strategies and innovative fortifications would have made him a pivotal figure in numerous battles throughout Europe during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Vauban's reputation as a military genius began to emerge during the Franco-Dutch War (1672-78), where his successful defense of the fortified city of Maastricht earned him the title of "Intendant of Fortifications" for the French King, Louis XIV. He went on to design and build over 100 forts, citadels, and bastions, transforming the landscape of French military defense.
