EDITORS COMMENTS
Selim I, also known as Sultan Bajazet I, was a significant figure in Turkish history, reigning from 1411 to 1413 and then again from 1421 to 1422. Born in Edirne, in the European part of the Ottoman Empire, Bajazet began his political career as a military commander under his father, Sultan Bayezid I. He gained prominence during the Ottoman civil war that followed Bayezid's defeat at the Battle of Ankara in 1402, which saw the invasion of the Ottoman lands by the Mongols and the Timurid Empire. In this striking portrait, Sultan Bajazet I is depicted wearing the traditional Ottoman attire of a long, flowing robe, known as a "hawlabi," and a grand turban. His beard is meticulously groomed, a sign of his royal status and maturity. The sultan's piercing gaze and strong jawline convey a sense of determination and power. Bajazet's reign was marked by military campaigns against the Byzantines and the Mongols. He was successful in reclaiming some of the territories lost during his father's reign, including the city of Edirne. However, his rule was short-lived, as he was eventually overthrown by his nephew, Mehmed I. Despite his brief tenure on the throne, Sultan Bajazet I left a lasting impact on Ottoman history. He is remembered as a capable military leader and an able administrator, who worked to strengthen the Ottoman state and maintain the loyalty of his subjects. This portrait serves as a testament to his legacy and the power and majesty of the Ottoman sultanate during the early 15th century.
