EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created in the 18th century, depicts a pivotal moment in Roman history: the Battle of the Jugurthine War between the army of Jugurtha, the King of Numidia in North Africa, and the Roman legions led by Consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus. The Jugurthine War, which took place between 111 and 104 BC, was a significant conflict for Rome as it marked the end of the Numidian Kingdom and the expansion of Roman territory in Africa. At the center of the image, Jugurtha, dressed as a Berber king, stands on horseback, surveying the battlefield with a determined expression. Behind him, his army, a mix of infantry and cavalry, prepares for battle. In the foreground, Roman legionaries, armed with shields and spears, charge towards the enemy, their faces set in grim determination. The landscape is barren and rocky, reflecting the harsh terrain of Africa. The figure of Sallustius Crispus, the Roman historian who wrote about the Jugurthine War, is also depicted in the scene, standing to the side and observing the battle with a quill in hand, likely recording the events for posterity. Sallustius, known as a "new man" for his non-aristocratic background, played a crucial role in the Roman political scene during this period, and his account of the Jugurthine War is an important historical source. This engraving, part of an edition from 1772, is now housed in the Library of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of conflict and expansion, and reminding us of the rich historical heritage that continues to inspire and captivate us today.
