EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment captured on June 29, 1937, at Southampton, the first batch of mail bound for South Africa is being loaded onto Imperial Airways' S23 C-Class flying boat, G-ADVE, affectionately known as Centurion. The aircraft, a technological marvel of its time, was about to embark on a groundbreaking transatlantic journey, marking a significant milestone in aviation history. The S23 C-Class flying boats, manufactured by Short Brothers, were a major improvement over their predecessors, boasting a longer range and greater carrying capacity. With a wingspan of 108 feet and a length of 77 feet, these magnificent machines were capable of carrying up to 22 passengers and a crew of five. The mail, carefully arranged on the tarmac, awaited its journey across the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The loading process was a meticulous one, ensuring that each package was securely fastened in place to withstand the rigors of the long flight. The crew, dressed in their smart uniforms, worked diligently to ensure that every detail was attended to, as the eyes of the world watched with bated breath. As the sun began to set over Southampton, the Centurion taxied onto the water, ready to take off on its historic voyage. The mail, now safely aboard, represented a new era of air travel, one that would bring the world closer together and pave the way for even greater achievements in aviation.
