In this historic moment captured on June 29, 1937, at Southampton, the first batch of mail bound for South Africa is being loaded onto Imperial Airways' S23 C-Class flying boat, G-ADVE, affectionately known as Centurion. The aircraft, a technological marvel of its time, was about to embark on a groundbreaking transatlantic journey, marking a significant milestone in aviation history. The S23 C-Class flying boats, manufactured by Short Brothers, were a major improvement over their predecessors, boasting a longer range and greater carrying capacity. With a wingspan of 108 feet and a length of 77 feet, these magnificent machines were capable of carrying up to 22 passengers and a crew of five. The mail, carefully arranged on the tarmac, awaited its journey across the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The loading process was a meticulous one, ensuring that each package was securely fastened in place to withstand the rigors of the long flight.
