EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken on 3rd April 1909 at 1.33 pm, captures an extraordinary moment in Battersea's history. The oval grass patch to the right of the three gasometers marks the spot where the balloon "Corona" rose just after its ascent. The region in question is Battersea, and the railway in the middle, with a train stationed, is Battersea Park Station. The two sets of rails belong to the South Eastern and Chatham and the London Brighton and South Coast Railways, showcasing the diverse transport infrastructure of the time. The road with the oval area is Victoria Bridge Road and Victoria Circus, while Battersea Park Road can be seen at the top of the large gasometer, running from left to right. The planes or aeroplanes, as they were then called, were still a novelty, and this image offers a unique perspective of the area, with the gasometers looming large and the railway and roads providing a sense of scale. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the intersection of old and new technologies and the bustling activity of a vibrant urban area.
