EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Keokuk, also known as the "Running Fox," who served as the chief of the Sac and Fox Nations during the early 20th century. Keokuk, a respected Native American leader, was born around 1803 in what is now Missouri. His people, the Sac and Foxes, were part of the Woodland Culture area and were known for their agricultural practices, hunting skills, and complex social organization. Keokuk rose to prominence during a time of great upheaval for Native American communities. In the late 1830s, the Sac and Foxes were forced to leave their ancestral lands in Missouri and relocate to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) as part of the Indian Removal Act. Keokuk, who had previously signed a treaty with the United States government, became a vocal opponent of the removal policy and tried to negotiate with President Andrew Jackson to keep his people in Missouri. Despite his efforts, the Sac and Foxes were eventually forced to make the arduous journey west. Keokuk led his people on this difficult journey, providing guidance and support to his community during this time of great hardship. This photograph, taken in the early 20th century, captures Keokuk in his later years. He is shown wearing traditional Native American clothing, including a headdress adorned with feathers and a beaded vest. Keokuk's piercing gaze and strong posture convey a sense of determination and resilience, despite the challenges he and his people had faced. Keokuk's legacy as a leader and advocate for his people is an important part of Native American history. His story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of Native American communities, even in the face of adversity.
