EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a moment between Prince Christian Victor of Schleswig-Holstein and Captain Stuart-Wortley at Wolmer Camp in 1899, just before the prince's departure for the Boer War in South Africa. Prince Christian Victor, the eldest son of Princess Helena, was a grandson of Queen Victoria, making him a member of the British Royal Family. Despite his royal lineage, he chose to serve in the military and joined the Imperial Yeomanry to fight in the Second Boer War. Tragically, Prince Christian Victor contracted malaria during his time in South Africa and passed away on September 16, 1899, at the age of 32. His untimely death was a great shock to the royal family and the British public, who had admired his bravery and dedication to duty. Captain Stuart-Wortley, a respected military officer, is seen here bidding farewell to his young friend and comrade. The solemn expression on both their faces speaks volumes about the gravity of the situation and the impending danger that Prince Christian Victor was about to face. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the young prince and other soldiers during the Boer War. The image is a poignant testament to the close bond between the prince and Captain Stuart-Wortley, as well as the camaraderie and shared sense of duty that existed among soldiers during this period. The photograph is a valuable historical document, offering a glimpse into the lives of these brave men and their experiences during a significant moment in history.
