EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph showcases a United States Air Force Beechcraft QU-22B, specifically model 69-7702 (MSN EB-10), which was developed as a very quiet, un-piloted relay station for the top-secret Igloo White movement detection system. Deployed in Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam War, these aircraft were unique in that they were flown without a pilot but carried an Igloo White operative. This particular QU-22B, however, did not see action in Vietnam theatre operations. Instead, it remained in the United States and was sent to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) for disposal on November 8, 1972. Declared excess on July 19, 1973, the aircraft was eventually sold with the civil registration N49893. The QU-22B program was an essential component of the Igloo White system, designed to monitor enemy activity along the Ho Chi Minh trail. Despite its military significance, this photograph serves as a reminder of the unique role these un-piloted aircraft played in intelligence gathering during the Vietnam War era.
