EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures Pope Johannes XXII, also known as Jacques Duéze, during his papacy from 1316 to 1334. Born in Cahors, France, in 1244, Duéze began his ecclesiastical career as a canon in the cathedral of Cahors before being appointed bishop of Avignon in 1305. His election as pope in 1316 marked the beginning of the Avignon Papacy, a period when the papacy was based in Avignon, France, rather than Rome. Johannes XXII is remembered for several significant achievements during his reign. He played a crucial role in the Council of Vienne in 1311-1312, which aimed to reform the Church and address issues such as heresy and simony. He also supported the Franciscan Order, issuing the papal bull "Cum Quisquam" in 1317, which confirmed the poverty rule of the order. However, Johannes XXII's papacy was not without controversy. He was accused of nepotism and favoritism towards the French, which contributed to the growing discontent among the Italian states. His controversial stance on the Beatific Vision, which held that the saints do not see God directly until the final resurrection, also sparked debate and criticism. Despite these challenges, Johannes XXII's papacy left a lasting impact on the Church and the world. He oversaw the completion of the Sistine Chapel and the construction of the Papal Palace in Avignon. His support for the arts and learning led to the establishment of the University of Avignon, which became a center of intellectual activity. This image of Pope Johannes XXII, with his papal tiara and robes, serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of the papacy during the Middle Ages. The intricate details of his attire and the solemn expression on his face convey the weight of responsibility and the importance of his role as the spiritual leader of Christendom during a time of great change and challenge.
