In this evocative hand-colored copperplate engraving, two Sufi Dervish devotees are depicted in the midst of their prayer rituals within a Dervish lodge. The first figure, with his long hair tied to the ceiling with a cord, is identified as a Mawlawi or Rumi Dervish, a member of the Mevlevi Order, one of the most famous and widespread Sufi brotherhoods in the Islamic world. The second figure, with a band around his hands and knees, and holding prayer beads, is identified as a Tawagozi or Seeker, a disciple seeking spiritual enlightenment through the teachings and practices of the Mevlevi Order.
