EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the portraits of some of the most renowned medieval Russian rulers: Yaroslav the Wise (6), Sviatoslav I (7), Sviatopolk I (8), Vladimir II Monomakh (9), Yuri I (10), Ivan II the Fair (11), Dmitri Donskoi (12), and Ivan III Vasilyevich (13). The image, taken from Giulio Ferraris' "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847 by Giarre and Stanghi, offers a fascinating glimpse into the regal past of Russia. Yaroslav the Wise, the Grand Prince of Kiev, is depicted with a thoughtful expression and a crown adorned with precious stones. Sviatoslav I, known as the Brave, is shown wearing a fur-trimmed robe and a helmet with a distinctive crest. Sviatopolk I, the Prince of Kiev, is portrayed with a serious expression and a simple, yet elegant, crown. Vladimir II Monomakh, the Grand Prince of Kiev and Moscow, is shown wearing a royal robe and a diadem. Yuri I, the Prince of Vladimir-Suzdal, is depicted with a stern gaze and a fur-trimmed robe. Ivan II the Fair, the Grand Duke of Moscow, is shown with a gentle expression and a simple crown. Dmitri Donskoi, the Prince of Moscow, is portrayed with a determined expression and a helmet adorned with a cross. Lastly, Ivan III Vasilyevich, the Grand Duke of Moscow and the first Tsar of Russia, is depicted in a grand robe and a complex, multi-tiered crown. This engraving offers a unique insight into the visual representation of medieval Russian monarchs and their regal attire, providing a valuable historical record of their appearance and legacy.
