EDITORS COMMENTS
Pennyroyal, Mentha pulegium, is depicted in this beautiful handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, based on a botanical illustration by David Blair from Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" published in London in 1880. Pennyroyal, also known as pudding grass or squaw mint, is a perennial herb native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The plant belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae, and is characterized by its small, purple-blue flowers, which bloom in dense spikes. The herb has a strong, pungent aroma, reminiscent of mint and thyme, and has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Pennyroyal was highly regarded in herbal medicine for its carminative, stimulant, and antispasmodic properties. It was traditionally used to alleviate digestive issues, including bloating, flatulence, and colic, as well as menstrual cramps and respiratory problems. The plant's essential oil, which contains the active compound pulegone, was also used topically to repel insects and as a moth repellent. However, it is important to note that Pennyroyal essential oil is toxic in large quantities and can cause poisoning, especially in children and pregnant women. The intricate details of the Pennyroyal plant are beautifully captured in this botanical illustration, showcasing its delicate leaves, stems, and flowers. The handcolouring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning addition to any herbal or botanical collection.
