This charming chromolithograph depicts the Jerusalem cherry, Solanum pseudocapsicum var. diflorum, also known as the Madeira winter cherry, star capsicum, or angels' trumpets. The vibrant red blooms of this small shrub are a delightful sight, adorned with intricate, trumpet-shaped flowers that resemble those of the Brugmansia sanguinea or datura, angels' trumpets. The Jerusalem cherry is native to South America and was introduced to Europe in the late 19th century. It was a popular addition to Victorian gardens and greenhouses, as evidenced by its inclusion in Edward Step's Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse, published by Frederick Warne in London in 1896. The illustration was created by Desire Bois, a skilled botanical artist of the time. The Jerusalem cherry is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 3 meters tall. Its small, oval leaves are covered in tiny hairs, and its branches are adorned with clusters of bright red, bell-shaped flowers.
