EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the triumphal entrance of King Cyrus II of Persia into Babylon on October 29, 540 BC. The Achaemenid king, renowned for his military prowess and conquest of Babylon, is shown atop his horse, surrounded by an array of Persian soldiers, weapons, and livestock. The soldiers, dressed in Persian attire, carry spears, shields, and quivers, while goats and a bull follow behind them. King Cyrus's horse is adorned with a richly decorated saddle and bridle, and the king himself wears a flowing robe and a diadem adorned with precious stones. The entrance into Babylon marked the culmination of Cyrus's successful campaign against the Neo-Babylonian Empire, which had been ruled by Nabonidus. The Persian army, depicted here in military formation, had marched through the desert for months, and their arrival in Babylon was met with great fanfare. The relief, inspired by the painting by Angelo Monticelli, is a testament to the grandeur and power of the Persian Empire during the reign of Cyrus II. The image is reminiscent of the bas-reliefs found in Persepolis, the ancient Persian capital, which depict similar scenes of royal processions and military victories. This engraving, created by Andrea Bernieri from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," provides a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and military practices of the ancient world. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the scene to life, transporting us back in time to witness the triumphant entrance of King Cyrus into Babylon.
