EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Crécy, fought on August 26, 1346, was a significant English victory during the Edwardian phase of the Hundred Years War between England and France. This pivotal event took place in the northern part of France, with the English army led by King Edward III and his son, the Black Prince, facing the much larger French army under the command of King Philip VI. The battle is named after the village of Crécy, where the English forces made their stand. The English army, consisting mainly of longbowmen and knights, utilized their superior tactics and weapons to outmaneuver and defeat the French, who were heavily reliant on their armored cavalry. The English longbowmen, with their powerful longbows, rained arrows upon the French ranks, causing heavy casualties before the battle even began. When the armies clashed, the English knights charged with their lances, breaking through the French cavalry lines. The French, unable to adapt to the English tactics, were left vulnerable and were quickly overwhelmed. The Battle of Crécy marked a turning point in the Hundred Years War, demonstrating the effectiveness of the English longbow and the importance of disciplined infantry in medieval warfare. The English victory allowed them to gain control of much of northern France and established Edward III as a major European power. This photograph, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, provides a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the 14th century and the momentous Battle of Crécy. The image depicts the chaos and intensity of the battlefield, with soldiers on horseback and on foot engaged in fierce combat, arrows flying through the air, and the smoke of battle rising in the background. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in this iconic battle.
