EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the spiritual transformation of Ignatius Loyola, the founding father of the Jesuit Order, as he is depicted in full ecclesiastical garb with his armor cast aside. Born in 1491 in the Basque region of Spain, Loyola's life took a dramatic turn when he was injured in the Battle of Pamplona in 1521. During his long convalescence, he experienced a series of profound spiritual revelations that led him to renounce his military career and devote himself to God. In this print, Loyola is shown in the later stages of his spiritual journey, having embraced the priesthood and founded the Society of Jesus in 1540. The ornate vestments he wears signify his new role as a spiritual leader, while the halo above his head denotes his sainthood, which was officially recognized by the Catholic Church in 1622. The landscape in the background, with its rolling hills and verdant trees, serves as a reminder of the natural beauty that inspired Loyola during his famous retreat to Manresa in 1522. It was during this retreat that he began to develop the Spiritual Exercises, a set of prayers and meditations that would become the cornerstone of Jesuit spirituality. The image also features the Bible, which is open on a stand beside Loyola, symbolizing the importance of scripture in his spiritual journey. The cast-aside armor, a reminder of his former life as a soldier, underscores the dramatic transformation that Loyola underwent and the sacrifices he made in the name of his faith. This print, created in 1556 by the artists Trichon and Garnier, is a testament to the enduring legacy of Ignatius Loyola and the Jesuit Order he founded. It offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Jesuits and the profound impact they have had on the Catholic Church and the world.
