EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, we see an early battery-electric pump-escape vehicle of the London Fire Brigade, manufactured by Cedes, parked in the drill yard at Southwark Headquarters. This appliance, based at Bow fire station, is a significant milestone in the evolution of firefighting technology. The vehicle is equipped with a 50ft escape ladder, which could be raised and lowered electrically, providing a safer and more efficient means of evacuating people from burning buildings. The batteries, stowed under the bonnet, added approximately 2.5 tons to the total weight of the vehicle. Although the battery power did not last long, the emerging shape of the early 20th century fire engine is clearly visible. The vehicle's electric motor and wheeled design were innovative features that laid the foundation for modern fire engines. This photograph, taken in 1906, captures the Edwardian era of transport and firefighting. The London County Council (LCC) Fire Brigade, the precursor to the London Fire Brigade, was at the forefront of experimenting with new technologies to improve their response capabilities. The Cedes battery-driven pump/escape appliance is a testament to their forward-thinking approach. The image provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the transformation of firefighting vehicles from horse-drawn carriages to electric-powered appliances. Despite the limitations of battery technology at the time, the London Fire Brigade continued to push the boundaries of innovation, paving the way for more advanced fire engines in the future.
