Amid the chaos and destruction of the Blitz, London Fire Brigade (LFB) crews bravely fought to control the inferno at the Blackfriars Goods Depot on Southwark Street, SE1, following an incendiary bombing raid on 16 October 1940. In this powerful image, firefighters are seen struggling to control a jet of water as they battle the flames engulfing the railway yard. The Second World War had brought London to its knees, with the city under relentless attack from the air. Yet, despite the danger and intensity of the fire, these brave men pressed on, determined to protect their city from further damage. The Blackfriars Goods Depot, a vital part of London's transport infrastructure, was a major target for the German air force during the war.
