EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two majestic vulture species: the King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) and the Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus). The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Omnithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology) by Frederic Cuvier, with paintings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraving by Coutant, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault in Paris, France. Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845) was a renowned painter of natural history, having worked at Empress Josephine's zoo before becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in this intricate engraving, which captures the grandeur and unique features of these two vulture species. The King Vulture, also known as the American King Vulture, is depicted with its distinctive featherless, bald head and neck, and its wings spread wide. The Cinereous Vulture, also called the Monk Vulture, is shown with its feathered head and neck, and its wings slightly folded against its body. Both vultures are depicted with their sharp, hooked beaks open, emphasizing their predatory nature. This historical artwork not only showcases the beauty and intricacy of these vulture species but also serves as a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication of the artists and scientists involved in its creation. The engraving is a valuable addition to any collection focused on natural history, ornithology, or the history of science.
