Vultures are large birds of prey found in many parts of the world. They have bald heads and long wings, and feed mainly on carrion. Vultures play an important role in the environment by helping to keep it clean by consuming dead animals that would otherwise rot and spread disease. There are two main types of vultures: Old World vultures, which live mainly in Europe, Africa, and Asia; and New World vultures, which live mostly in North and South America. Vultures have keen eyesight that helps them spot food from a great distance away. They also have strong beaks that can tear through tough hides to get at their meal inside. Vulture populations are declining due to habitat loss, poisoning from lead ammunition used for hunting, collisions with wind turbines or power lines, electrocution on power poles or fences, as well as illegal killing for sport or superstition. Conservation efforts are needed to help protect these essential scavengers from further decline.
