EDITORS COMMENTS
James Gilmour: A Scottish Missionary in China, 1891 This evocative photograph captures the image of Reverend James Gilmour (1843-1895), a renowned Scottish missionary who dedicated his life to spreading Christianity in China during the late 19th century. The portrait, taken in 1891, depicts Gilmour in his traditional missionary attire, including a long robe, skull cap, and a full beard that had grown over many years of living in the Far East. Born in Scotland in 1843, Gilmour was educated at the University of Edinburgh before answering the call to become a missionary. He arrived in China in 1872, initially serving in the southern province of Fujian. Gilmour's missionary work was marked by his dedication to learning the local language and culture, which helped him to build strong relationships with the Chinese people. He also established several schools and hospitals, providing essential services to the local community. Despite facing numerous challenges, including persecution and imprisonment, Gilmour remained committed to his work. He was eventually martyred in 1895, during the Boxer Rebellion, a violent anti-foreigner uprising that targeted missionaries, diplomats, and other foreigners living in China. Gilmour's death brought widespread attention to the plight of foreigners in China and led to increased international intervention. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by James Gilmour and other missionaries who dedicated their lives to spreading the word of Christianity in China during a time of great cultural and political change. The image of Gilmour, with his wise and compassionate expression, continues to inspire and captivate viewers, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Scottish missionary work in China during the late 19th century.
